Hydra-Cell Pro Pump Repair Kits Explained

Hydra-Cell Pro pumps are extremely reliable due to their lack of dynamic seals; it’s those seals which wear and result in leakage that contribute to fugitive emissions and unplanned downtime. The periodic maintenance required consists of changing the oil in the Hydraulic End per the pump models specific IOM manual and replacing the components in contact with the pumped fluid.

Integral to the pump’s reliability is the minimal number of components in contact with the liquid and the ability to change them without specialized tools or training. These components can be changed without removing the pump to a workbench if there is sufficient area around the pump to access the perimeter cap screws.

Diaphragm Kit (D)

The standard Diaphragm Kit includes the following components:

Diaphragms
Follower O-Rings (for securing screws on some models)
Manifold O-Rings (outer, inner, and centerbolt for some models)
Loctite 242

Valve Kit (V)

The Valve Kit provides the necessary parts to rebuild the check valve assemblies:

Manifold O-Rings (outer, inner, centerbolt)
Check Valve O-Rings
Valve Seats
Valve Discs
Valve Springs
Tetra Seals
Dampening Washers (as applicable)

Complete Kit (K)

The Complete Kit contains all components of both the Diaphragm and Valve kits. The number of diaphragms and check valve components vary based upon the number of pumping chambers applicable to specific pump models.

Which Kit is Required?

The wear components are generally the valve disc and valve seat because those are the components constantly contacting each other up to 29x per second. As these components wear, they lose some of their sealing efficiency and this is eventually noticed as erratic pressure or flow (whichever is monitored).

The wear is mostly due to physical contact but can also be related to chemical attack and abrasive velocity across the valve disc and seat. This is why they are offered in numerous materials including stainless steel, Hastelloy, tungsten carbide and ceramic. Likewise, all of the other components are available in several materials to maximize performance longevity. Most applications which do not involve abrasive or chemically aggressive liquids will have a check valve life of at least 8,000 hours.

Chemical attack aside, the diaphragms and o-rings are not considered “wear components”, even though the most common kit sold is the Complete Kit; this is because most customers prefer to replace everything when the pump is serviced since the additional cost and time is minimal.

Individual Components

You may elect to purchase individual components referring to the PDF or online parts list, for example (model D10 pump) and all material options will be listed:

However, the kit pricing always costs less than purchasing all of the same components individually.

Tool Kits

While you can remove/replace all fluid end components without special tools, if you have several Hydra-Cell Pro Pumps there are two specialized tools which make things easier, the puller/lever and valve plunger holder.

Puller/Lever Tool: Enables lifting the outlet valve seats much easier. Without it, standard practice is to use a flat head screwdriver and hammer from the pump chamber side to gently push them out. The tool helps ensure the seat is removed straight-up without resistance from the discharge side of the valve plate. Puller and Lever tools in action
Valve Plunger Holder: Holds the shaft steady to enable removing and installing the screw holding the diaphragm to the underlying plunger. Without it you would need to stick a fine Allen wrench or similar tool into the plunger hole to hold it steady which may result in slight bending of the Allen wrench. Valve plunger holder tool
